Indifference opens the way for violence

Tuesday, January 27, Auschwitz, Poland - President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The President together with other European and world leaders and representatives of international organizations paid tribute to those who were killed at this Nazi concentration camp and to all victims of the Holocaust.

"Millions of lives lost in death camps remind us that cynical indifference opens the way for violence and aggression. Therefore, it is our duty and responsibility not to allow the darkest chapters of history to be repeated. We cannot remain indifferent to what has occurred and what is happening today," the President said.

During the remembrance event, heads of state spoke with survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. According to the President, people who survived this tragedy are true examples of human strength and courage.

Taking part in the liberation anniversary ceremony were French President François Hollande, German President Joachim Gauck, Polish President Bronisław Komorowski, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Austrian President Heinz Fischer, Croatian President Ivo Josipović, Maltese President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga, Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde.

A museum founded on the site of the former Auschwitz concentration camp is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Lithuania allocated 20,000 euros for the reconstruction of the museum last year.
